Private equity funding rose sharply in 2019, drxDATA finds

A total amount of £41.2 billion private equity funding was raised in the UK in 2019, according to figures produced by drxDATA. This was an increase of 54% on the previous year, when £26.7 billion of private equity funding was raised.

A total of 34 UK PE funds were closed during the year, with the median size of fund being £557.3 million. This was an increase on 2018, when 29 funds were closed and the average size of fund was £348 million.

The big rise in the average size of the funds was reflected in the fact that during the year, a total of 464 investments were made by 332 investors, whereas in 2018, a total of 592 investments were made by 439 investors.

Samuel Robberts, Head of drxDATA said: “2019 represented an interesting year in the private equity market. Capital flows into funds picked up on 2018, largely representing a cyclical drive for funds from existing houses. Interestingly, this fund cycle appears to be accelerating over time, with both a larger amount of capital per fund and less time between fund raises for those already investing.”
